BOSS

“Two more women disappeared. Poof. Just gone. Same thing as that first one that made it look like she got lost walking from her vehicle into her own house.” Wrecker and Marshall were sitting across from me at my desk filling me in on what had gone down during the four days I’d been at the hospital. “And we had another car vandalized - this one in a different neighborhood over by the mall. Same fucking thing as the others. Thousands of dollars in damage but not a single belonging missing.”

“What is that shit? I don’t get it,” I admitted. “Who fucking does that? And why?”

“I’m working on a theory, but I’ll need to access some older files, and I can’t get logged into the computer,” Detective Marshall explained. “For some reason, IT can’t get my password to work. I’ve gone around and around with that bullshit. They’ve got my laptop ready. I just can’t access any files other than mine.”

“Who have you talked to about it?”

“The tech and his boss in IT. There’s no further up the chain I can go other than you.”

I stared at the man for a minute and then reached over and opened my laptop. I logged in, found the folder he’d need to access, and turned it around to face him. “Search for what you need. I’ll get you a flash drive for now, and we’ll go from there. What about your computer, Wrecker? All access?”

“I have no idea. I had the files I’ve been working with sent by crime scene techs.”

“Check your computer and make sure you can get to everything. I’ll put the fear of God into the fucking IT department and get his shit figured out. Until then, you have my laptop.”

“Is that battery charged?” Wrecker asked abruptly. “And you’ve got access to the servers if you’re connected to Wi-Fi?”

“Yeah.”

“I think it’s your turn to buy coffee.”

I tilted my head and stared at him for a second before I stood up. “Then, by all means, let’s get us a coffee. My girl’s got her truck at the park for some craft festival going on this afternoon.”

“I had her coffee at the hospital. It was like drinking a Reese’s. I don’t know how she got the flavor so exact - I feel like she’s got some kind of voodoo shit going on.. It was not of this world. I’ll take a gallon more of the stuff,” Wrecker admitted.

“When I left this morning, she was pulling some sort of pecan caramel thing out of the oven. I’m gonna end up weighing 700 pounds just from the smells in her house. I’m constantly hungry.”

The three of us walked out of my office, and when I turned to lock the door, Wrecker reached for my key. I looked at him curiously but handed it over and moved out of the way. He dropped the keyring on the floor and knelt down in front of the door to pick it up.
